01

What Perinatal Mental Health Covers

Perinatal mental health refers to emotional well-being from trying to conceive, through pregnancy, birth, and the first year or so after a baby arrives. It includes anxiety and depression during pregnancy or postpartum, birth trauma, intrusive thoughts, identity shifts, relationship strain, and the grief that can come with infertility or a birth that did not go as planned.

These experiences are common, and they are treatable. Struggling does not mean you are doing motherhood wrong.

02

Why It Is a Focus at Guiding Hope

Pregnancy and postpartum care is one of the practice's core specialties. Dr. Ashley Carroll-Brown's specialty areas include postpartum challenges for new mothers, and she is currently pursuing certification in perinatal mental health. Mallori Thompson supports women through infertility, pregnancy, postpartum adjustment, and the transition into motherhood, and brings lived experience as a mother of two.

Because sessions are online, you can meet from home during nap time, from the nursery, or while on leave, without arranging childcare or travel.

03

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy offers a place to say the things that feel hard to say anywhere else, including the thoughts that frighten you. Your clinician can help you understand what is happening, reduce anxiety and low mood, process a difficult birth, and adjust to the identity and relationship changes that come with a new baby.

Approaches may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy, which has strong research support for perinatal depression.

04

If You Need Help Right Now

If you are in crisis or thinking about suicide, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at any hour.
